How do you form the simple future tense in French?

In French grammar, the simple future tense is formed using the following pattern:

1- Take the Infinitive Form of the Verb:

Start with the infinitive form of the verb, which is the unconjugated form of the verb ending in -er, -ir, or -re.

2- Add the Simple Future Tense Endings:

Add the appropriate future tense endings to the infinitive form of the verb. The future tense endings are the same for all regular verbs, regardless of their infinitive endings.

For regular -er verbs:

  • Je -ai

  • Tu -as

  • Il/Elle/On -a

  • Nous -ons

  • Vous -ez

  • Ils/Elles -ont

For regular -ir and -re verbs, the endings are the same as for -er verbs, but without the final -e:

  • Je -ai

  • Tu -as

  • Il/Elle/On -a

  • Nous -ons

  • Vous -ez

  • Ils/Elles -ont

3- Conjugate the Verb:

Combine the appropriate subject pronoun with the future tense ending to conjugate the verb.

Example for the verb "parler" (to speak) in the future tense:

  • Je parlerai (I will speak).

  • Tu parleras (You will speak).

  • Il/Elle/On parlera (He/She/One will speak).

  • Nous parlerons (We will speak).

  • Vous parlerez (You will speak).

  • Ils/Elles parleront (They will speak).

For irregular verbs: The simple future tense is formed differently and must be memorized on a case-by-case basis. These verbs often have unique stems in the future tense, but they still use the same future tense endings as regular verbs.
